When it comes to designing a game's UI, icons play a vital role in conveying the game's visual identity and even the world setting. As part of my ongoing efforts to hone my UI skills, I've taken on the challenge of crafting skill icons from initial concept to their polished final versions within UE5. This page will receive periodic updates as I continue to refine and expand the collection.
Concept
I aimed to set my icon concept apart from the commonly seen, ornate hand-drawn or gothic styles from traditional RPG games. Seeking a fresher and unique approach, I opted for a 'paper craft' aesthetic for my concept.
Sketches
I picked twelve skill icons that usually appear in the RPG games. For instance, shield, elemental spells - fire, lightning, and haste, etc.
Modeling
Unreal Engine 5
I textured the icon "blizzard" in Substance Painter and rendered it in Unreal Engine 5. I just used simple materials like aged metal and cotton paper. I would like to explore more styles soon.
